Facebook rolls out new tool to curb sharing of fake news

New York: In a battle against fake news, Facebook has started to roll out a new tool that fact-checks the stories a user shares.

According to a report in Telegraph on Monday, some users in the US saw a pop-up window appearing when they shared a story on their profile, reading “Disputed by multiple, independent fact-checkers.”

Facebook has been severely criticised for promoting fake news and spreading misinformation. It was also accused of helping US President Donald Trump win the elections by allowing misinformation and fake stories on its platform.

“Before you share this content, you might want to know that the fact-checking sites, Snopes.com and Associated Press disputed its accuracy,” the report noted.

However, the tool is not available to all Facebook users yet. The pop-window appeared on a story about “Irish slave trade” which the Facebook fact-checking team believes is a conspiracy theory.

To curb the fake news, Facebook has rolled out several tools to flag false stories. In December last year, social media giant announced to flag stories with the aim to provide more context to help people perceive the news in a proper way.

“We’ll use the reports from our community, along with other signals, to send stories to these organisations,” Facebook was quoted as saying.

Man Raped 17 Year Old Girl! Judge Clears Him Stating”He Did Not Enjoy It”

The dark times, just seem to get darker, even after trying and crying so hard for the matriarchal society to respect and restrain themselves from forcing themselves on the female population, its all in vain!

Now we all had hoped on the legal system of every country, but it seems that hope is eradicated with this very absurd and unjust verdict given by the Mexican court over the case of sexual assault on a 17- yr old girl.

The bizarre verdict, in this case, was that a 21-year-old man accused of abducting as well as raping a schoolgirl was freed from the clutches of the law by Mexican judge on grounds that said, he didn’t enjoy himself.

Well, as according to the reports by Washington post, the incident happened on New Year’s Eve of 2015, the accused, Diego Cruz, along with his four friends had abducted the 17-year-old victim and then sexually assaulted her.

The judge in his verdict mentioned that

“although Cruz had touched the victim’s breasts and penetrated her with his fingers, he had done so without “carnal intent” – and so was not guilty of assault”

Adding to the verdict he said that

” Cruz touched the minor and, at the same time, did not intend to reach a vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse”.

In his verdict, the judge noted,

“Touching or incidental rubbing, be it in a public or private place, would not be considered a sexual act, if the element of intent to satisfy a sexual desire at the expense of the passive subject is absent”.

On the account of this unjust and undoubtedly shocking verdict, the father of the victim, Javier Fernández, said that “with this legal protection anybody would be able to touch a young girl without penal consequences,” as relayed by the local media.

Coinciding to this tragic episode, the victim speaks about her emotional state and takes her stand on the issue, on a Facebook post she writes,

“I’m not hiding. I’m not saying anything but the truth. I have nothing to repent” adding to it, “I’ve gone drinking. I’ve gone to parties. I’ve worn short skirts like many girls my age… and for that, I’m going to be judged? For that, I deserved what happened?”

Meanwhile, Cruz who actually belongs to a wealthy family was extradited to Mexico and now has fled to Spain after the incident.

Tech rewind: How Twitter came to be

Twitter

Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Christopher Isaac “Biz” Stone and Evan Williams. Co-founder Noah Glass has been credited for the name ‘Twitter’, which was initially ‘twttr’ during the project development stage. The initial idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group was proposed by Jack Dorsey. The reason for using an abbreviated name for the project was due to the domain ‘twitter.com’ being unavailable at the time.

Work on the project officially commenced on March 21, 2006. Jack Dorseypublished the first Twitter message at 9:50 PM Pacific Standard Time (PST): “just setting up my twttr”.

Twitter was initially used as an internal service for employees of the podcasting firm Odeo of which co-founders Noah Glass and Evan Williams were owners. The developers initially considered “10958” as a short code, but later changed it to “40404” for “ease of use and memorability.”

Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Dorsey, and other members of Odeo, formed Obvious Corporation in October 2006 and acquired Odeo, together with its assets, which included Odeo.com and Twitter.com. Noah Glass was fired by Evan Williams following this and would remain silent about his part in Twitter’s startup until an interview in 2011. In the book, Hatching Twitter, author Nick Bilton, Glass is given credit for having helped realize the idea, and designing some of its core features. By April 2007, Twitter spun off into its own company.

Twitter usage increased from 20,000 tweets per day to 60,000 during 2007 South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) conference. This is considered the tipping point for the microblogging site’s popularity. According to mediapersons who covered the event, Twitter messages were exclusively streamed on two cleverly placed60-inch plasma screens in the conference hallways, which enabled hundreds of conference-goers kept tabs on each other via constant twitters. Panelists and speakers mentioned the service, and the bloggers in attendance touted it.

Sunil Grover To Return As Mashoor Gulati & Rinku Bhabhi But Not On “The Kapil Sharma Show”

Needless to say, fans are badly missing Sunil Grover in “The Kapil Sharma Show” as he was the soul of the reality show. At one fell swoop, it’s also utterly true that TKSS will never be that entertaining as it was with Sunil.

Despite Kapil’s apology, Sunil has shown no interest in returning on the show but wait, what’s this? Sunil will be seen on Sony this Sunday as Dr. Mashoor Gulati and Rinku Bhabhi. Seriously?

Well, before you start building castles in the air, let’s just make it clear that he is not coming back on “The Kapil Sharma Show”. Additionally, he’s not even launching his own show and will not be a part of any new show.

He will appear as Dr. Gulati and Rinku Bhabhi in the grand finale of the popular reality show Indian Idol.

The shooting of his part in the show was done yesterday in Film City where Kapil Sharma was also present for the shooting of TKSS with cast of “Sabse Bada Kalakaar” including veteran actress Raveena Tandon. Nevertheless, Kapil didn’t make any attempt of making peace with the comedian.

On the contrary, Grover has clarified that he is planning for doing merely live shows and at present, he doesn’t want to be a part of any other show. In the get-up of Dr. Gulati, he will do a live show in Talkatora Auditorium, Delhi, on April 1.

There’s a bad news for fans of TKSS, as on Sunday, the Indian Idol finale will run for more than its usual time so “The Kapil Sharma Show” won’t be aired.

Facebook apps to stop working on many devices

Facebook apps to stop working on many devices

New York: Facebook app and Messenger will soon stop working on many smartphones which run the older version of these apps.

According to a report in Independent on Wednesday, Facebook will end support for devices running some older versions of the apps, including v55 of the Facebook app and v10 of Messenger on Android.

Further, it will also stop support for Facebook on Windows Phone.

“If you find you are suddenly unable to run either app, Facebook suggests updating to the latest version, or migrating to Facebook Lite, a pared down version of the platform,” the report said.

The social media giant said that its team spends countless hours making the platform best.

“One of the ways we continue to improve is by consistently introducing rich features, like voice and video calling, games, and bots for Messenger. Using older versions of apps means that experiences won’t work well or sometimes not at all,” Facebook said in a blog post.

Facebook for iPad v26, Messenger v8 for iOS, Facebook for iOS released in 2011, Facebook for Windows Phone, Messenger for Windows Phone 8 and 8.1, and Facebook for Windows 8 and the 8.1 desktop will not be supported also.

Vote to Repeal US Broadband Privacy Rules Sparks Interest in VPNs

The vote by the U.S. Congress to repeal rules that limit how internet service providers can use customer data has generated renewed interest in an old internet technology: virtual private networks, or VPNs.

VPNs cloak a customer’s web-surfing history by making an encrypted connection to a private server, which then searches the Web on the customer’s behalf without revealing the destination addresses. VPNs are often used to connect to a secure business network, or in countries such as China and
Turkey to bypass government restrictions on Web surfing.

Privacy-conscious techies are now talking of using VPNs as a matter of course to guard against broadband providers collecting data about which internet sites and services they are using.

“Time to start using a VPN at home,” Vijaya Gadde, general counsel of Twitter Inc, said in a tweet on Tuesday that was retweeted by Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey.

Gadde was not immediately available for comment. Twitter said she was commenting in her personal capacity and not on behalf of the company.

The Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives voted 215-205 on Tuesday to repeal rules adopted last year by the Federal Communications Commission under then-President Barack Obama to require broadband providers to obtain consumer consent before using their data for advertising or marketing.

The U.S. Senate, also controlled by Republicans, voted 50-48 last week to reverse the rules. The White House said President Donald Trump supported the repeal measure.

Supporters of the repeal said the FCC unfairly required internet service providers like AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp and Verizon Communications Inc to do more to protect customers’ privacy than websites like Alphabet Inc’s
Google or Facebook Inc.

Critics said the repeal would weaken consumers’ privacy protections.

VPN advantages, drawbacks

Protected data includes a customer’s web-browsing history, which in turn can be used to discover other types of information, including health and financial data.

Some smaller broadband providers are now seizing on privacy as a competitive advantage. Sonic, a California-based broadband provider, offers a free VPN service to its customers so they can connect to its network when they are not home. That ensures that when Sonic users log on to wi-fi at a coffee shop or hotel, for example, their data is not collected by that establishment’s
broadband provider.

“We see VPN as being important for our customers when they’re not on our network. They can take it with them on the road,” CEO Dane Jasper said.

In many areas of the country, there is no option to choose an independent broadband provider and consumers will have to pay for a VPN service to shield their browsing habits.

Private Internet Access, a VPN provider, took a visible stand against the repeal measure when it bought a full-page ad in the New York Times on Sunday. But the company, which boasts about a million subscribers, potentially stands to benefit from the legislation, acknowledged marketing director Caleb Chen.

VPNs have drawbacks. They funnel all user traffic through one point, so they are an attractive target for hackers and spies. The biggest obstacle to their routine use as a privacy safeguard is that they can be too much of a hassle to set up for many customers. They also cost money.

“The further along toward being a computer scientist you have to be to use a VPN, the smaller a portion of the population we’re talking about that can use it,” said Ernesto Falcon, a legislative counsel for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which opposed the bill.
