Carl Edwards at Atlanta helping Daniel Suarez; has no 'firm' political plans currently

Carl Edwards is at Atlanta Motor Speedway. And no, he’s not entered in any races this weekend.

Edwards is at the track helping his replacement, Daniel Suarez, get acclimated to the 1.5-mile track. And while Edwards admitted he brought his helmet and firesuit with him, he doesn’t have any plans to get back into a car for a final ride on Atlanta’s current pavement.

From NBC Sports: ” data-reactid=”22″>Edwards spoke to a group of reporters Friday at the track and said the plans were hatched to help Suarez as the two filmed a commercial Tuesday. And he’s still not using the r-word, even though he isn’t driving anytime soon. From NBC Sports:

“Everybody calls it retirement; I haven’t called it retirement officially,” he said. “I admit I brought my helmet and driver suit today, just in case somebody needed something. But I’m having a lot of fun. I’m just so grateful to Coach (Joe Gibbs) and everybody for letting me make the decision I made. But it is cool coming back here and seeing everybody. It’s really fun.”

Edwards also said he hasn’t made a political decision yet. Rumors of a potential U.S. Senate run in 2018 began earlier this year with an article on the Columbia, Missouri, public radio station’s website. Edwards is a Columbia native while Claire McCaskill (D) is up for re-election next year and has said that she expects to face a primary opponent.

But don’t go connecting any dots at the moment; there’s been no indication or reports that her opponent could be the 28-time Cup Series winner.

“I haven’t decided on the political stuff,” he said. “Like I talked about at that press conference, I really believe in individual freedom and liberty and what the United States is based upon. I think, like anybody, I’ve been paying attention. It’s a little scary what’s been going on as a whole in our country and in the world.

“If I can help with that down the line, great. But I don’t have any firm plans right now.”
