In this case, the most interesting thing about the news was who broke it.

The Smith who is still playing NFL football, Torrey, is now free to sign with someone else. Smith had 930 yards and seven touchdowns in two 49ers seasons, though it’s hard to quantify how much terrible quarterback play led to that. Smith’s five-year, $40 million deal ends after just two seasons, and the 49ers won’t have to pay his $6.5 million salary or $1.5 million in workout or roster bonuses. Torrey Smith could end up being a decent discounted pickup for a team looking for a deep threat. He’s unlikely to draw another big deal after two bad seasons.
And we’ll wait around for Steve Smith to perhaps tells us where Torrey Smith will land.
