Two of baseball’s biggest stars had their contracts renewed at surprisingly low rates on Friday, and that could prove to be a pretty big deal.

The team decided on $605K, which is up from the $535,375K he earned last season, but far below his value coming off two strong seasons to begin his career.” data-reactid=”15″>According to the New York Daily News, Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard was the only player who failed to reach a contract agreement with the team. The fact that both players had their contracts renewed means they were seeking salaries the team wasn’t willing to accommodate. That part is not uncommon, but it speaks to a delicate process that can set the tone for the long-term relationship between team and player. If the player feels like he’s being short-changed on this end of his career, it could motivate him to seek more later or at least be less willing to take less again, assuming his value holds up.
Of course, most pre-arbitration players know they have more to prove before earning the big money. It’s doubtful either went too crazy with their demands, but the Mets and Astros are sticking to the pay scale they feel works, and they aren’t budging for anyone. The feeling on the team’s end being if they relent here, it might open the door for drama with other players now and down the road.
Like we said, it’s a delicate process, and everyone is paying attention. That includes the players, their agents and even other teams as they set their budgets and seek affordable players.
