Just like every year, Sony launched their product lineup in MWC Barcelona 2017. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a flagship from the OEM. This device is the first one that incorporates many features which weren’t seen in smartphone portfolio.
The Xperia XZ Premium, packs 4K IPS LCD screen (5.5 inch, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protected), coupled with Bravia engine to drive bright colours. Now the device also supports HDR+ mode, the feature makes the display more brighter, with 40 percent brighter that their last year flagship, the Xperia Z5.
This is the first smartphone (announced), to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, coupled with 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64 GB of onboard storage, backed by external SD card support with up to 2 TB capability. Like one’s expectations, the device runs on latest version of Android AKA Nougat 7.1.
In terms of camera, the device packs a 19 MP rear facing sensor (Motion Eye camera (1/2.3″ Exmor RS, f/2.0); SteadyShot, Anti-distortion shutter, predictive capture), the device can record native 4K videos at 30 fps as well as 720p videos at 960 fps. This is by far the all time best slow motion video, delivered from any smartphone. Speaking of selfie camera, the device packs a 13 MP sensor with 1/3.06″ Exmor RS, f/2.0 aperture, which can also record native 4K videos. These features brigs back the Sony’s crown for making best camera devices.
As the Sony Xperia XZ is powered by SD 835, the device now supports LTE with download speeds upto 1 Gbps, though, no operator is offering that speed as of now. The device derives juice from its 3200 mAh Li-Ion non user replaceable battery, with Qualcomm Quick charge as well as Qnovo adaptive charging.
However, the availability of finger print sensor is limited to certain markets. In US, though the sensor is present, it is deactivated at the software level. However, the device will not be available until Spring of 2017 .
Moving on to Sony Xperia XZs, the mini variant of the flagship, which features the same design language. However, in terms of hardware, the XZs gets a slight hit. The device features a 5.2 inch 1080p IPS LCD screen, with Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, coupled with 4 GB RAM with either 32 GB/64 GB internal storage with a dedicated SD card slot.
In terms of the camera, even the XZs packs similar sensors with similar features. Even the 960 fps slow motion video recording comes as a standard feature. The 13 MP selfie camera is also a replica. In terms of battery, this device gets a slightly smaller 2900 mAh Li-Ion battery, with quick charging capabilities.
Two more devices launched in MWC were, the Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra.
The Xperia XA1 is powered by Helio P20 SoC, coupled with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage, as well as a dedicated SD card slot. In terms of display, the device houses an old school 5 inch 720p IPS LCD screen. The camera comes out to be a true champ, as the device packs a 23 MP rear facing sensor with 1080p video recording capability. The selfie camera maxes out at 8 MP. The device packs 2300 mAh Li-Ion non user replaceable battery, with Pump Express+ 2.0 (MTK’s fast charging technique).
The Xperia XA1 Ultra feels a little premium over Xa1. The XA1 Premium is powered by same Helio P20 SoC, coupled with 4 GB RAM and comes in either 32 GB or 64 GB internal storage, with a dedicated SD card slot. Even the display gets a slight upgrade; now the device features a 1080p 6 inch IPS LCD screen. The main camera remains the same, however, the selfie camera is replaced with a 16 MP auto focus sensor, with optical image stabilisation , backed by LED flash as well. Even the battery is upgraded to 2700 mAh, to cope up with 6 inch screen’s requirements.
Both devices come with Android Nougat 7.1 out of the box with USB Type C port, with OTG capabilities.
