Week 20 Fantasy Hockey winners and losers

123

Now that the trade deadline has passed, it is time to shift the focus to the playoffs. In week 19, there were major changes shaking up some teams; week 20 deals with the fallout. Some big teams are waiting for new players to find their footing, and others struggle to fill the holes left behind.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Defenseman: Kevin Shattenkirk, Washington Capitals

Last week’s stats: 3 games, 0 Goals, 1 Assist, with a new Team, Yahoo 95%

Kevin Shattenkirk scored his first point as a Capital on Saturday night. It came as an assist on Nicklas Backstrom’s game-winning overtime goal. In his first two games, Shattenkirk had five shots on goal and couldn’t find the back of the net, but he garners attention because his first point came in an emotion-fueled rivalry against the Flyers.

Shattenkirk makes the move from a team fighting for a wildcard spot to one that is comfortably in the hunt. That is going to elevate his play during the next few weeks. The defenseman currently has 11 goals and 32 assists with the two clubs.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Winger: Kyle Palmieri, New Jersey Devils

Last week’s stats: 4 games, 2 goals, 2 Assists, Yahoo 69%

Palmieri has been hot while his team has not. He had two multi-point games this week. In the other two games, his team was shutout. The Devils have lost the last seven games, but Palmieri has nine points during this losing streak. He had multiple shots on goal in each game for a week’s total of 15 and a +1 rating. Palmieri continues to lead his team in points, even though he was tied by Taylor Hall last week at 42.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Center: Mathieu Perreault, Winnipeg Jets

Last week’s stats: 3 games, 1 goal, 4 Assists, Yahoo 16%

Perreault is on a seven-game streak, in which he amassed 11 points. This is easily his longest streak in the season and makes up more than half of his points for the year. Even if he slows down, his 16 percent ownership makes him a hidden gem.

He comes with a word of caution though: this streak came after five games in which he didn’t net a point and that was his second-longest period of the season. Perreault has been skating alongside Patrik Laine and Mark Scheifele and that is elevating his play.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Goalie: Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals

Last week’s stats: 3 games, 3 wins, 2 goals, Yahoo 100%

Holtby has been a major part of the Capitals success all season. During their current hot streak, he has accounted for five wins and hasn’t had an overtime loss since December 27. He allowed one or fewer goals in each game during week 20. He won all three and one of these was a shutout. Holtby currently leads the league in wins with 34 and a GAA of 1.89.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Defenseman: Jake Gardiner, Toronto Maple Leafs

Last week’s stats: 3 games, 0 Goals, 0 assists, Yahoo 52%

Gardiner was a dud. He scored zero points and earned minimal defensive marks. In each game he made only one block during more than 20 minutes of ice time. While Gardiner has been a sturdy player for his team, he doesn’t pull the type of fantasy points needed to survive being traded and his natural level on Yahoo rosters should be well under 50 percent.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Winger: Ryan Hartman, Chicago Blackhawks
Last week’s stats: 3 games, 0 goals, 0 assists, Yahoo 6%” data-reactid=”32″>Winger: Ryan Hartman, Chicago Blackhawks
Last week’s stats: 3 games, 0 goals, 0 assists, Yahoo 6%

Hartman has been a steady scorer in his first full season at the NHL level. He has scored 15 goals and 11 assists. Unfortunately, these numbers were not boosted this week. Hartman was scoreless in three games. He had a high of four shots against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, but only managed one shot in each of his next two games. His last goal and assist came more than a week ago against Arizona, when he had his third multi-point game of the year.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Center: Matt Duchene, Colorado Avalanche
Last week’s stats: 4 games, 0 Goals, 0 Assists, Yahoo 71%” data-reactid=”34″>Center: Matt Duchene, Colorado Avalanche
Last week’s stats: 4 games, 0 Goals, 0 Assists, Yahoo 71%

Now that the trade deadline buzz has passed, people can go back to not caring about Duchene. As the best scorer on the worst team in the league, he received a lot of fantasy attention over the last few weeks. He didn’t put up the performance to merit it, however. His last goal and assist came on February 19 against Tampa Bay. Since then he sits with a -7 ranking over seven games.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Goalie: Ben Bishop, Los Angeles Kings
Last week’s stats: 2 games, 2 losses, with a new team, Yahoo 89%” data-reactid=”36″>Goalie: Ben Bishop, Los Angeles Kings
Last week’s stats: 2 games, 2 losses, with a new team, Yahoo 89%

Bishop made his debut for the Kings this week after being traded for Petr Budaj. The trade was triggered by the return of Jonathan Quick and that is important in this week’s outlook.

Bishop will fall into the role of backup for Quick, and so far he’s yet to get his legs under him. He lost his first two games with the Kings this week, letting in two goals in one contest and four in the second. It takes some time for a goalie to mesh with a new team, but the first couple of games are important in deciding how often Bishop will get the start — and just how much rest Quick will get between now and the playoffs.
